Sandboxes are making a return with The Repopulation

So, The Repopulation. What is it?

Its a new, sci-fi based MMO. Now, before you go thinking what I initially did, a few things need to be said. The team is apparently trying to base everything on hard science. This won't be a take on sci-fi or science fantasy classics. No glowbats from Star Wars, no Deus Ex style tech loopholes where possible. They're also very committed to making it being a sandbox style game. I had actually known about it when it was just starting development in late 2011, early 2012 - In fact, I was probably more interested in this game than I was Star Wars: The Old Republic.

It is now 2013, and the team on this game has made significant progress and just released a first glimpse at their Beastiary - the creatures and wildlife that will inhabit the world - for the world to see. You can see more here. In my opinion, the graphics in this game are absolutely beautiful so far.

It isn't the beastiary or even the graphics that impress me with The Repopulation, though. Those, while impressive in their own right, aren't what interest me as a player. Take a look around their site a little bit, and you will soon find that they want to bring in player housing and player-created cities. Also, being that this is a sandbox, there aren't any levels or indication of them. No, in fact, you can theoretically master every single skill in the game if you put in enough time to do so.

This game is starting to remind me of a lot of things I really enjoyed about Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided. Before you say anything, however, I should point out that there are a number of people associated with this team that enjoyed that game as well. This game won't be that one, but it is a sandbox, and that is what I think many gamers have been wanting for a while now.

So, why should you follow this game? All of the above. If you're looking for a game that will truly be a sandbox, this will be it. In fact, I'm going to go ahead and say that this game is probably currently the best hope that sandbox MMOs have right now.
